Alfred Percy Birks planted the first vines in 1892 on the western edge of Clare and released the first Wendouree wines in 1895. Son Roly Birks took over in 1917 and made wine through to 1983, sixty vintages, adding the great Shiraz block in 1919 with successive plantings to 1971. Lita and Tony Brady bought the property in 1974 and remain custodians of one of Australia's seven Langton's "exceptional" wines. Mailing-list only; the application is by hand-written letter. First order must include a varied selection (only Shiraz means struck off). No retail. Worth the eccentric process.— Yarranabbe Editorial
