The Five-Night Reset

For when the year has become a list of unanswered emails.

The Five-Night Reset

The two-night spa weekend is a sampler. The five-night programme is where the system actually resets. Below is the trip we recommend for someone who has noticed that the sleep is not what it should be, who has stopped reading anything beyond the work emails, and whose calendar has been the master for too long.

There are three legitimately serious wellness retreats within practical Australian distance of Sydney: Gwinganna (Gold Coast hinterland, the best programme in the category), the Capella Lodge stay on Lord Howe (wellness through removal, not through structured programming), and the combined Gwinganna-then-Capella ten-night version. We describe the Gwinganna-only version here as the entry-level reset.

The picks

Yellow

Pre-flight transition, the Saturday before

Yellow

A plant-based dinner the Saturday before the programme begins, calibrated to the start. Brent Savage's tasting at Yellow is the right one. (If Sydney is not where you live, eat lightly and early on Saturday wherever you are.)

Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat

Stay, Sunday to Friday (5 nights)

Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat

Tony de Leede's twenty-year-old hinterland property in the Tallebudgera Valley above Burleigh, part-owned by Hugh Jackman. Five-night programmes run Sunday to Friday; check in by 4pm Sunday for first dinner. Phones go away at meals (the only retreat in Australia that means it). Indicative AU$4,200-$5,800 per person all-inclusive depending on suite category.

Park Hyatt Sydney

Re-entry, Friday night

Park Hyatt Sydney

If returning to a household where the children's homework will undo the reset by Saturday lunch, book one Friday night at Park Hyatt for a controlled re-entry. The harbourside room is the right choice; the silence after Gwinganna does not survive an inland room.

Margaret

Re-entry dinner, Saturday

Margaret

The first proper dinner back. Margaret in Double Bay if you want the steak (which you will). Book for Saturday night following return; Friday is too soon, Sunday is the wrong day.

The five-night programme runs Sunday to Friday because almost everyone needs the bookend weekend nights to travel. Do not attempt the four-night programme (begins Wednesday); the rhythm doesn't have time to catch.

Repeat annually. Most regulars repeat in winter (June-August), when the Gold Coast hinterland is dry and the temperature is right for the ridge walks. The shoulder months are September and October: clear, warm, but the property fills.
